Polyethylene is a thermoplastic resin produced through the addition polymerization of ethylene; its molecular structure consists solely of carbon and hydrogen atoms. It is non-toxic, exhibits excellent low-temperature resistance (with a minimum service temperature as low as -100°C), and possesses good chemical stability, being resistant to corrosion by acids and bases (with the exception of oxidizing acids). While it offers good electrical insulation properties, it has poor heat resistance and limited resistance to aging. Depending on the polymerization conditions, its molecular weight can range from 10,000 to several million. Based on the polymerization method employed, it is classified into high-pressure, medium-pressure, and low-pressure polyethylene. In terms of consumption, high-pressure polyethylene accounts for the largest share, with the ratio of high-pressure polyethylene to medium- and low-pressure polyethylene ranging from 3:1 to 2:1.
